"Genius watches the monad through all his masks as he performs the metempsychosis of nature. Genius detects through the fly, through the caterpillar, through the grub, through the egg, the constant individual; through countless individuals, the fixed species; through many species, the genus; through all genera, the steadfast type; through all the kingdoms of organized life, the eternal unity. Nature is a mutable cloud, which is always and never the same."
–R.W.Emerson from his essay "HIstory"
ocean’s motion
in the pattern on a shell
sunrise and sunset in its colors
an image of the tree in the leaf
our skeletons reflected in the ancient reef
what are we? where from and what for
comes our form? what’s reflections?
the wind in stars? a sunrise
in the child’s smile that the world lights up?
upon what invisible bough do we shiver?
silent invisibility’s negative space
giving form and voice to that which in us only
can be seen and heard
i want to paint clouds gathered in a sky
because they’ll be what i make them. gathered in the blue
hundreds of thousands in white Ihram circling the Kabba
within the sacred space of angels
