Sweet Jane seem to be a band from Dublin. I downloaded their four song “Blackboots And Blackhearts” from eMusic a few weeks ago having never heard of the band before. I wasn’t disappointed. If there is a musical era or genre that I relate with my high school years in the late eighties, early nineties, it is what came to be known as “Shoegaze” which is exactly how Sweet Jane describe themselves on their Myspace page: Psychedelic, Shoegaze, Rock. If you like Ride, Stone Roses, Jesus and Mary Chain, MBV, etc, you might want to check out “Black Boots and Black Hearts.” In these days of replicant bands, bands able to imitate any period in the history of rock and roll, where the cover band becomes the original band (maybe that is the eternal return of rock and roll) Sweet Jane pull it off with authenticity. Me thinks their eyes really are stuck to the tips of their black boots because their black hearts are so heavy. There are a few bands, like the Dirtbombs who were recently on the road with TVOTR, who reference this Philedelphia 1960′s R&B sound. The Dirtbombs fuse it with a biting, testosterone driven distortion; but Sweet Jane, well, their name says more than I can. Check out the track “Take Me Home.”
